Media magnateĀ Oprah Winfrey. Talk show hostĀ Jimmy Kimmel. Singer-songwritersĀ Billie EilishĀ andĀ Taylor Swift.
Theyāre among the celebrities whoĀ misleading social media posts claimedĀ left or said theyād leave the United States following President Donald Trumpās 2024 election.
But those claims are false, and so is a new one in the same vein.
āBREAKING NEWS,ā a Jan. 21 FacebookĀ postĀ said. āWhoopi Goldberg, Megan Rapinoe and Taylor Swift decide to leave the United States.ā
This post was flagged as part of Metaās efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about ourĀ partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)
The post included aĀ linkĀ to a site titled āTruth here!ā with a Jan. 21 post bearing a headline with the same claim as the Facebook post.
The blog post didnāt mention Trump, but claimed ātheir decisions to leave America come amidst a backdrop of mounting social, political and economic tensions.ā
We previouslyĀ fact-checked and found FalseĀ a claim that Swift said she was leaving the country if Trump became president, and that sheĀ moved to Canada after his victory.
We looked anew for credible evidence, such as public statements or news reports, that sheās leaving the country and found none.
We also found no such evidence to corroborate the claims about Goldberg or Rapinoe.
On Nov. 10, a Facebook account that posts fabricated storiesĀ wroteĀ that Rapinoe was leaving the United States āafter massive red waveā because she said she couldnāt ālive here anymore,ā but the post was clearly labeled āsatire.ā
A similar claim, that Rapinoe and Goldberg were going to leave America because they āget no respect here,ā alsoĀ originatedĀ on a self-described satire site.
We rate claims Goldberg, Rapinoe and Swift said theyāre leaving the United States False.
