The college sports world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two young athletes whose lives were cut short far too soon, leaving teammates, coaches, and fans reflecting on the impact they made both on and off the field. Among them was Dominiq Ponder, a quarterback whose passing has deeply shaken the University of Colorado football program and the broader college football community. University officials confirmed that Ponder died at just 23 years old on March 1, 2026, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from those who knew him as a dedicated athlete and uplifting teammate.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred early Sunday morning in Boulder County. Investigators reported that a 23-year-old driver operating a 2023 Tesla lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve shortly before 3 a.m. The car crossed into oncoming lanes, struck a guardrail and a utility pole, and rolled over. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Later that day, the university confirmed the driver was Ponder. The team’s head coach released a statement expressing sympathy for his family and asked the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.

Ponder had been preparing for his third season with the Colorado Buffaloes. Originally from Florida, he built a strong reputation as a talented quarterback before arriving in Boulder. Standing 6-foot-5 and known for his athleticism, he played high school football in multiple cities before finishing at Myrtle Beach Collegiate Academy. Over the years, he posted impressive passing and rushing numbers that drew attention from several college programs. After beginning his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman and later spending time at Georgia Tech, he transferred to Colorado, where he continued developing his skills while pursuing a degree in criminology.

In the wake of the tragedy, the university’s athletics department has made counseling resources available to student-athletes and staff as they cope with the loss. The football program has also shared tributes highlighting Ponder’s leadership, work ethic, and positive presence within the team. His passing comes at a time when the college sports community is also grieving other recent losses, including a freshman baseball player from Radford University who died in a separate incident.

Though the circumstances differ, both tragedies serve as a powerful reminder of how closely connected sports communities can be. Teammates, coaches, and fans continue to honor these young athletes not only for their performance on the field, but for the character, determination, and spirit they brought to those around them.
